Diaper Bag Essentials

Getting your diaper bag ready for your sweet baby’s arrival can be a really fun task. But there are so many baby items that you can bring with you when you’re leaving the house. It can be overwhelming. And if you’re not careful, your diaper bag may become too heavy to carry! We’ve compiled a list of essentials to keep in your diaper bag so you can have everything you need and nothing you don’t.

Ok...this one is a given. It’s called a diaper bag, so you should bring some diapers. Despite this fact, there are too many instances to count when I forgot to pack diapers in my diaper bag. So try to keep an extra diaper or two in your car just in case you forget too.

If you have a newborn, you’ll want to take about one diaper for every two hours that you’ll be out of the house. And pack a few extra. You never know if today will be a particularly messy diaper day.

If you haven’t ventured into the world of baby wipes, you may not yet know that they are basically the superhero of baby products. They can clean everything from bums to hands to snotty noses. They’ll even clean your back seat of baby puke when in a pinch! So always make sure you have a pack of these in your diaper bag. You’ll be sad if you don’t!

Feeding Supplies

Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding or both, you need to make sure you bring your essentials with you:

These are just your basic essentials. You’ll want to bring anything that makes you feel comfortable during feeding. A nursing cover and burp rag may be essential for you too.

Bringing your BlueSmart mia along with you will allow you to continue tracking your baby’s feedings. Or if you are dropping your child off with a nanny or at daycare your baby‘s caregiver can use the mia to track feedings. This will help give you peace of mind that baby is being fed properly and on the right schedule.

Every child is different, but if your baby is anything like mine then you‘ll want to bring at least one pacifier in your diaper bag. My baby boy always had to have a pacifier when he was an infant and we were in trouble if we didn‘t have one! So make your day a little easier and make sure you pack at least one.

Baby Blanket

Even if it‘s the middle of summer, you should still bring along a baby blanket with you. If you sit in a restaurant or shop at a store that is too cold for baby you’ll want something to put over them. A muslin blanket is great in the summer for keeping baby warm, blocking sun and cleaning up spit up.

Hand Sanitizer

Get a small travel size hand sanitizer and hang it on the outside of your diaper bag. These are great for cleaning your hands after a diaper change or before preparing baby‘s bottle.

Change of Clothes

An extra onesie and pair of socks is the perfect extra set of clothes to bring for your baby. A diaper blow out, spit up or messy lunch can all make a clothing change necessary.

So those are your essential items that you should have in your diaper bag. Below is a quick list of other items that may prove helpful to have.

  • Plastic diaper disposal bags
  • Changing pad
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Hat
  • Toys and books
  • Sunscreen
  • First Aid Kit
  • Extra clothes for mom
  • Snacks for mom and baby
